The Merrill P. Spencer Institutes for Health & Innovation
Dr. Merrill P. Spencer founded the Institute of Applied Physiology & Medicine (IAPM) in Seattle in 1971. To honor his extraordinary career and extensive contributions to health and medicine the organization will be continuing his work as the IAPM (a 501c3 non-profit organization).
Most recently, award winning documentary producers featured him in a Special Segment for the award winning PBS/ KCTS9 Television Series “Remarkable People”.
During his career, Dr. Spencer and his work in cardiovascular physiology caught the attention of top leaders from around the world, well beyond his various areas of specialty. His work as the founding Executive Director of the Virginia Mason Research Center (later named the Benaroya Institute) attracted famous pioneers to want to meet and collaborate with him, such as Charles Lindbergh and his son Jon, as well as many others in cardio and neurovascular medicine and research.
Dr. Spencer passed away in 2006 at the age of 84. As those who knew him would expect, he continued his work up until the day of his passing.
