WHAT IS A PSMP?

What is a Progressive, Proactive Safety Management Program?  And how does it apply to Athletics/Sports?

There are three types of Safety Management Programs:

Progressive and Proactive -

A PSMP (Progressive Safety Management Program) looks for solutions for injury prevention both inside and outside of the industry our client is in.  There are often companies in other industries facing the same type of workplace hazard and they have already found the best way to mitigate or eliminate the risk of this type of injury.  We can use apply their methodology for injury prevention to our client even though is comes from a different industry.

A PSMP makes changes BEFORE injuries/fatalities occur.

Reactive - A Reactive Safety Management Program makes changes AFTER injuries/fatalities occur.

Nonexistent - A Nonexistent Safety Management Program assumes that injuries and fatalities are inevitable. No changes in safety training, standard operating procedures (SOP), or safety equipment are implemented. Employees are treated and rehabbed and sent back to work doing the same things that led to their injury in the first place.

Nonexistent Safety Management is ubiquitous in athletics. We are here to change that!

What is the process that is used for creating SOA (State of the Art) PSMPs?

1. Site inspections to identify and correct safety violations on site.

2. Review of current training programs. Does the client have all of the training programs available necessary to provide a healthy and safe workplace?  (Basic fundamental of OSHA regulations; to do everything we can to provide a healthy and safe workplace.) Often clients need training programs that are not addressed by Federal and State safety regulations. Their needs go beyond the scope of the regulations. They have injuries that are caused by events not covered by regulations.

3. Determine what types of injuries have occurred and what has been done to mitigate, minimize or eliminate the risk of the injury re-occurring. It is common to find that NOTHING has been done to mitigate or eliminate those risks; whether in industry or sports.

4. Interview employees to find out if they have had work-related injuries that weren't severe enough to require medical treatment or to miss work. Find out if they have had any "near misses" or close calls where accidents almost occurred.

5. Evaluate their use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment). Are they using the right safety equipment and are they using it properly?

6. Teach their PSMP specific safety training classes.

The fundamentals, principals, and rules of occupational safety are the same for all businesses in all industries. They also apply to ALL sports. We are the first to apply these proven methodologies for reducing and/or eliminating work-related injuries/fatalities to sports.
